Nanocellulose based carbon ink and its application in electrochromic displays and supercapacitors

Abstract Conventional electronics have been highlighted as a very unsustainable technology; hazardous wastes are produced both during their manufacturing but also, due to limited recyclability, end of life cycle (e.g. disposal in landfill). In recent years additive processes (i.e. screen printing) attracted significant interest more sustainable approach electronic (printed electronics). Despite the field printed addressing some issues related electronics, many components and inks still considered environment difficult recycle. Here we present development low environmental impact carbon ink based on non-hazardous solvent cellulosic matrix (nanocellulose) its implementation electrochromic displays (ECDs) supercapacitors. As part reported work, different protocol for mixing cellulose nanofibrils (rotation high shear force mixing), nanocellulose grades carbon: ratios were investigated optimized. The rheology profiles showed good thinning properties, demonstrating suitability screen-printing technology. printability developed was excellent line with those reference commercial inks. lower electrical conductivity (400 S m −1 compared 1000 inks), which may be explained by difference composition (carbon content, density derived nature) carbon, functioned adequately counter electrode all screen-printed ECDs even allowed improved supercapacitors utilizing this sense, incorporating current collector layer had an average capacitance = 97.4 mF cm −2 61.6 . herein provides step towards green electronics.
